  • The Price of Home Heating

I just got my “Bluewave Energy” bill in the mail and like a good doobie, I filled in the most recent amount into my ongoing spreadsheet.

Check out the nice jump from 2007 to now as compared to previous years. Holy S#@%! (Perhaps I shouldn’t track this stuff anymore?)
    May 2008 - 1.1309
    April 2007 - 0.7400

We can only hope the same jump doesn’t happen between now and next year, or there will be a lot of cold people this winter. Good thing I’m saving my pennies.

  • Breaking up with FaceBook

Today I finally got the guts to tell FaceBook where to go. I have ended our 2 year relationship and am now free!

Perhaps someday FaceBook and I will get back together. If and when we do, the friends we make will indeed be our friends, not just people we casually talk to…

Now I have more time for Twitter!

    *** UPDATE ***
    Mon. Jun. 9th

Facebook over the weekend said they had removed my account…

    Hi Paul,

We have deleted your profile information and removed your email address from our login database. Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns.

Yes this morning I still have friend requests and am able to log in. What’s up with that? I sent them another e-mail, lets see if they get it right this time.

  • Corner Gas did an episode called “The Littlest Yarbo” where a dog comes into town and Hank believes it is “The Littlest Hobo” from the TV Show. Have a search for it, it is Season 3, Episode 5. Very funny.

  • When Volcanoes Spew Lightning

Several days ago, a volcano that had been dormant for 9,000 years near the coast of Chile erupted spectacularly, hurling liquified metals and lightning many miles into the sky. The results, which you see here, are called a “dirty thunderstorm,” and are quite rare. Nobody is certain what causes them, but according to National Geographic it’s believed to be “the result of rock fragments, ash, and ice particles in the plume collid[ing] to produce static charges—just as ice particles collide to create charge in regular thunderstorms.”

  • Well if you are around the same age as me and grew up listening to bands like Loverboy then you need to know about their newest album, “Just Getting Started”. They may be older but they can still rock the joint.

Listening to the album the first time I could hear hits in almost every song. Many very catchy and up-beat. Too bad they don’t have the money behind them that they did back in the 80’s because they could push this to be top album.

Do yourself a favor and visit their site http://www.loverboyband.com/ and listen to a preview of the songs on the album (upper right corner). If you ever liked any of the old stuff, you are sure to like the new stuff. In some respects many of the tunes remind me of Bon Jovi and if you replaced Mike’s voice with Jon’s, man they could be Jovi tunes.

Amazon.ca is selling the album for $9.96 (link)
You can get it for $9.90 on iTunes or walk into an HMV store and pick it up for $9.99 (link)

Now I don’t usually do music reviews, but I’m a long time fan and have all their albums (except for the greatest hit albums since I already had the other ones) and yes, I even bought “Six”… that one sucked.

All the original band members are back except for bassist Scott Smith (who was declared dead after being lost at sea back on November 30, 2000) is replaced by Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve, who you may know from Tom Cochrane’s band.

  • This is a great interview if you ever watched the movie “Pirates of Silicon Valley” regarding the start of Microsoft. This is the story of the guys that lost the deal to Bill.

You’ve heard the stories about how Microsoft and Bill Gates got the operating system business with IBM and how Gary Kildall and Digital Research lost the deal.

But I’ve always wondered about why Gary was out flying that day.

So when I got a chance to sit down with Gary Kildall’s best friend and FLYING PARTNER that day I jumped at the chance. That’s Tom Rolander who held a key role inside Digital Research (the folks who made CPM which, back before the IBM PC, was one of the most popular personal computer OS of the day — my dad had a CPM card for our Apple IIs so we could run software designed for it).

    Read it all here…

NOTE: The first 12 minutes or so are pretty boring background, so skip that if you want…

  • Jonathan Coulton wrote a song called Code Monkey, you can listen to it here. He also had a competition for people to submit remixes of it. I like the last one the best!
